Il Gladiatore is a mural created by artist Neve on February 21, 2020 in Via Marghera, Milan, commissioned by Il Centro – Centro Commerciale di Arese, produced by Publimun.
"Il Gladiatore" is a large-scale outdoor mural painted on February 21, 2020 on Via Marghera in Milan, produced by Publimun for Il Centro — the shopping centre in Arese — on the occasion of an exhibition the centre was mounting on the theme of gladiators. The figure fills the full height of the building wall: a gladiator in three-quarter view, standing, holding a short sword in one hand and a large bronze circular shield in the other. His armour is dark leather and metal; the helmet — full-face, spiked, silver — is rendered with the hyperrealist precision of worked metal, the mask expressionless and absolute. The black ground gives the figure no spatial context. The light falls on the polished surfaces of the helmet and shield and disappears into the shadow of everything else. Il Centro's logo and Neve's signature appear at the bottom of the wall. The mural was completed on February 21, 2020 — the same day that Italy's first identified COVID-19 case was confirmed in Codogno, Lodi, less than 40 kilometres away. Within weeks, Milan and all of Lombardy entered lockdown. The gladiator on Via Marghera — an image of armoured resistance, a figure trained to endure — remained on the wall far longer than its campaign schedule had anticipated. For people moving through the empty streets of Milan during the pandemic months, it became something other than advertising: a sign of resistance.
