Ubris is a studio work by artist Neve, pencils on black cardboard on MDF, created in 2015.
"Ubris" is a colored pencil drawing on black cardboard from 2015. The title is the Italian transliteration of ὕβρις — hybris, the ancient Greek term for the excess that precedes ruin: arrogance beyond measure, the overreach that calls down its own punishment. The image shows a man with a crown of thorns, hands pressing it into his scalp — a figure that sits at the exact intersection of hubris and its consequence. The accusation leveled against Christ by his judges was precisely this: the claim to divinity, to be the Son of God, was read as the ultimate hubris. The crown of thorns was the answer — a mockery of the title, a king's crown made of pain. And yet the act of crowning him, the cruelty dressed as ceremony, was itself the hubris: the soldiers who placed it believed they were diminishing him. Neve renders the moment from close, from within arm's reach. The face is composed — not broken, not theatrical. The drama is in the hands and the thorns, not in the expression. The face simply holds. The title does not resolve the question of whose hubris it names.
