Zen is a studio work by artist Neve, pencils on MDF, 50 × 70 cm, created in January 2016.
"Zen" is a pencil drawing on MDF from January 2016. A man's face, frontal and direct — the gaze steady, the expression neither tense nor relaxed but simply present. At the center of the forehead, exactly at the location the Hindu and Buddhist traditions call the ajna: the third eye, the seat of inner perception, the point through which consciousness looks inward rather than outward. Here it is rendered as a small, perfectly round point of light — luminous against the dark ground, more precise than anything else in the drawing. The third eye does not blink. It does not move with the rest of the face. It is not part of the expression — it is above it, anterior to it, the still point that remains when everything else shifts. In Buddhist iconography it represents the state that Zen practice aims at: not transcendence but clarity, not escape from the world but full presence in it without the noise of commentary. The face that carries it is specific — a particular man, with a particular beard, in a particular light. The spiritual is not abstracted away from the human. It sits in the middle of a face that has lived, looking straight back.
