Le Cabine del Paradiso – VII. Saturno is a mural created by artist Neve in 2021 in San Fele, Potenza, commissioned by E-Distribuzione (Enel Group) under the patronage of the Ministero della Cultura.
One of nine electrical distribution cabins across Italy commissioned by E-Distribuzione for the 700th anniversary of Dante's death, each corresponding to a Heaven of the Paradiso read through a hermetic and alchemical framework. The project carries the patronage of the Ministero della Cultura and uses Aerlite photocatalytic paint. The seventh Heaven is Saturn (Saturno) — the sphere of contemplatives: monks, hermits, mystics who withdrew from the world to pursue the interior life. Here Dante meets St. Peter Damian, who speaks of solitude, of the ladder of contemplation that souls ascend into the Empyrean. In the alchemical tradition, Saturn is lead — the heaviest and slowest of the metals, associated with old age, introspection, the weight of time, and also with the prime matter from which transformation begins. Saturn is the planet of the philosopher in his cell. The cabin in San Fele — a medieval hilltop town in the Basilicata interior, its stone streets and vernacular architecture unchanged for centuries — sits directly against the historic fabric of the town centre. The stone pavement around it, the old walls behind it, and the cabin's own low, wide form all participate in the composition. The surface is painted entirely black; from it emerges a monochromatic portrait of an elderly man in three-quarter view, his hand raised near his face in a gesture of thought or shelter — inward, concentrated, somewhere between prayer and contemplation. The Roman numeral VII is painted large on the left face of the cabin; the alchemical symbol ♄ for Saturn occupies the right. The E-Distribuzione mark and Neve's signature are present in the lower left. The choice of San Fele for the cabin of contemplation is precise: a small, interior, elevated town, far from any centre, preserved by its distance from the world — a place that already enacts the withdrawal its heaven describes.
