The Brightest Light is a mural created by artist Neve in June 2023 in Quattordio, Alessandria, for the Quattordio Urbana Arte festival.
"The Brightest Light" is a self-portrait — Neve's first large-scale roller work in colour, painted in June 2023 in Quattordio, in the Monferrato hills where he grew up, as part of the Quattordio Urbana Arte festival. The figure stands at night, in the countryside he has always known. He looks upward. His chest cracks open, and from inside — where a person's centre is supposed to be — a house burns. Not destroyed, but burning: a fire that is also a light. The work was made with holy water. Before painting, Neve had the canisters blessed, then used them to paint himself. The gesture sits somewhere between ritual and irony, between the sacred and the self-deprecating — a cathartic act, done with a smile. "The Brightest Light" was painted during a period in which Neve was coming to terms with a recent diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. The burning house is not only destruction — it is revelation. What breaks open is also what becomes visible. The brightest light, sometimes, is the one that comes from inside a fire.
